How To upgrade HandicapMaster with File Sharing from 5 or 6 to Version 7?

Please note: these instructions should only be used if you are sharing a database between a number of PCs using a Windows File Share. If you have a single local database please view these instructions.

To upgrade HandicapMaster from version 5 or 6 to Version 7, we recommend that you proceed as follows:

On the Database server Computer

  1. Download the version 7 software, or receive the latest software on CD.

  2. Install version 7 by running the downloaded file or inserting the CD.

    It is recommended that you install to the folder suggested by the installer, thereby avoiding overwriting your existing version 5 or 6 software.

  3. Create the File Share Folder on the Server Computer

    1. Create a folder on the computer where the database is to be located.
    2. Using Windows File Sharing ensure that this folder is shared.
      Note: the permissions of this folder must allow remote users access
  4. Copy a blank database into the File Share Folder.

    1. Locate the blank HandicapMaster database file named "Handicap" or "Handicap.mdb". By default this will be in folder C:\Program Files\HandicapMaster7
    2. Copy this file from the HandicapMaster installation folder into the File Share folder created above.
  5. Create a new Database Instance in HandicapMaster

    1. Start HandicapMaster Version 7.
    2. Select FILE menu, then OPTIONS, then click the DATABASE tab. Click the CONFIGURE button
    3. Click NEW to add a new database. This will start the Database Wizard. Click NEXT twice.
    4. On the "Type of Database to Create" window, select:
      None (Locate Existing Database)
      and then click NEXT.
    5. Click FIND and then navigate to the folder on this computer where you created the File Share Folder.
    6. Select the file named "Handicap" or "Handicap.mdb" and click OPEN
    7. Click NEXT and then enter a suitable description for this database and select an appropriate icon from the list. Click NEXT then FINISH. You will see the database displayed in the list.
    8. Click OK and then close down HandicapMaster.
  6. Backup your database from Version 5 or 6.

    1. Start HandicapMaster Version 5 or 6.
    2. Select FILE menu, then BACKUP DATABASE.
    3. Click CHANGE FOLDER and select a folder on your local drive. Click OK, then YES to create a backup file.
    4. Exit HandicapMaster Version 5 or 6.

  7. Copy the database to Version 7

    1. Start HandicapMaster Version 7 you will now be presented with a list of databases, select the one you have just added. This is now the active database.
    2. Select FILE menu, then RESTORE DATABASE.
    3. Click CHANGE FOLDER and select the folder you used with version 6. Click OK, then YES to restore the backup file.

  8. Remove the Default database

    1. Select FILE menu, then OPTIONS, then click the DATABASE tab. Click the CONFIGURE button
    2. Select the "Default" database and Click REMOVE
    3. Confirm the removal of "Default" from the list.
    4. At the "Delete the Database and all associated files" select NO.
    5. Click OK to leave the Database Configuration.
  9. Restart HandicapMaster

    You should be automatically taken into your database.

On the Client Computers

Once you have completed the above steps the following steps are required on each of the client computers

  1. Download the version 7 software, or receive the latest software on CD.

  2. Install version 7 by running the downloaded file or inserting the CD.

    It is recommended that you install to the folder suggested by the installer, thereby avoiding overwriting your existing version 5 or 6 software.

  3. Create a new Database Instance in HandicapMaster

    1. Start HandicapMaster Version 7.
    2. Select FILE menu, then OPTIONS, then click the DATABASE tab. Click the CONFIGURE button
    3. Click NEW to add a new database. This will start the Database Wizard. Click NEXT twice.
    4. On the "Type of Database to Create" window, select:
      None (Locate Existing Database)
      and then click NEXT.
    5. Click FIND and then navigate to the folder on the Windows File Share that is on the Server computer.
    6. Select the file named "Handicap" or "Handicap.mdb" and click OPEN
    7. Click NEXT and then enter a suitable description for this database and select an appropriate icon from the list. Click NEXT then FINISH. You will see the database displayed in the list.
    8. Click OK and then close down HandicapMaster.
  4. Remove the Default database

    1. Select FILE menu, then OPTIONS, then click the DATABASE tab. Click the CONFIGURE button
    2. Select the "Default" database and Click REMOVE
    3. Confirm the removal of "Default" from the list.
    4. At the "Delete the Database and all associated files" select NO.
    5. Click OK to leave the Database Configuration.
  5. Restart HandicapMaster

    You should be automatically taken into your database.

Removing Version 5 or 6

  1. When you no longer require version 5 or 6, uninstall version 5 or 6.

    1. Start Windows CONTROL PANEL
    2. Select ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS
    3. Highlight 'HandicapMaster Version 5 or 6' and click REMOVE
    4. Click YES to prompt 'Are you sure you want to completely remove HandicapMaster Golf Software and all of its components?'
    5. Click 'NO TO ALL' to 'Remove Shared File'?

    Once version 6 has been removed, restart version 7 and perform a Backup (Click FILE menu, then BACKUP DATABASE). If an error relating to file 'ZLIB' occurs, please re-run the version 7 installer.

    We are investigating the potential cause of this error.

Note

It is not possible to backup a CLUB or PREMIER edition database and restore it to NETWORK edition. If you would like to do this, please contact us so that we may help.
